GUWAHATI: The counting of votes for the 126 assembly seats in Assam commenced simultaneously across 40 counting centers in 35 districts at precisely 8 am on Monday. This election marks the first held after the delimitation of assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies was carried out in 2023, which redrew the boundaries of the constituencies.
Key Contenders and Alliances
The fate of a total of 722 candidates, including 258 independents, will be determined by the end of the day to form the 16th legislative assembly in the state. While a reconfigured BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), now including the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) as a partner, is seeking a third consecutive term, the Congress party is hoping for a comeback after 10 years, supported by an alliance of five regional parties and the Left.
Prominent Candidates
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is contesting for his sixth consecutive win from the Jalukbari constituency, which covers parts of Guwahati city. Opposition leader Gaurav Gogoi is making his debut in assembly elections from the Jorhat constituency in upper Assam. Among other top contenders is All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal, who is attempting a return to the assembly after 17 years, contesting from the renamed Binnakandi constituency. Former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi is contesting from the Dispur seat as a BJP candidate.
Security Measures
The Election Commission has implemented a strong security blanket around all counting centers and has banned any kind of victory celebrations, processions, and bursting of firecrackers within 200 meters of the counting centers.
