Assam Final SR Voter List Published Today; Extensive SIR Planned Post-Assembly Polls

The final electoral roll for Assam, following the completion of the Special Revision (SR) process, is officially published today. This crucial document reflects the updated voter database for the state, incorporating changes verified through an intensive door-to-door campaign.

Key Details of the Special Revision Process

Unlike the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) conducted in twelve other states and union territories, which relied on form-filling and document submission, Assam's SR was executed through direct, physical verification. A massive workforce of 29,656 Booth Level Officers (BLOs) was deployed across the state to ensure accuracy and inclusivity in this meticulous process.

Electoral Roll Statistics and Changes

The draft roll compiled after the SR listed a total of 2,52,01,624 electors. This figure represents a significant 1.35 per cent increase compared to the previous final roll published in January 2025. The revision period, spanning from January 6 to December 27 of last year, recorded substantial updates:

  • Additions: 7,86,841 new voters were enrolled.
  • Deletions: 4,47,196 names were removed from the list.

During the verification, officials identified several categories for potential adjustment:

  1. Deceased Electors: 4,78,992 individuals were marked as deceased.
  2. Shifted Electors: 5,23,680 voters were found to have relocated.
  3. Multiple Entries: 53,619 cases of duplicate registrations were detected.

The Election Commission has clarified that formal deletion or shifting of these identified names will only occur after processing applications during the designated claims and objections period, ensuring due process is followed.

Future Plans: Extensive SIR After Assembly Elections

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that an "extensive" Special Intensive Revision (SIR) will be conducted in Assam following the conclusion of the upcoming Assembly elections. This indicates a continued focus on refining and updating the electoral database to maintain its integrity and comprehensiveness.

Preparations for Upcoming Assembly Elections

In related developments, the Election Commission has been actively reviewing Assam's preparedness for the Assembly elections, which are anticipated to take place in March or April. A comprehensive two-day meeting was held to assess various critical aspects, including district-level readiness, security arrangements, and coordination with enforcement agencies. This proactive approach aims to ensure smooth and fair electoral proceedings in the state.

The publication of the final SR voter list marks a pivotal step in Assam's electoral management, setting the stage for both the imminent Assembly polls and the subsequent intensive revision efforts announced by the state's leadership.
