Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) general secretary and Punjab Water Supply and Sewerage Board Chairman Sunny Singh Ahluwalia has written to Cabinet Minister Harjot Singh Bains and Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh, urging them to address the growing stray dog menace in the state.
Key Demands in the Letter
In his letter, Ahluwalia highlighted the increasing population of stray dogs and the rising number of dog bite incidents. He called for coordinated efforts from local authorities and the general public to tackle the issue effectively. Ahluwalia specifically urged the government to undertake large-scale sterilisation programmes, ensure comprehensive anti-rabies vaccination drives, and make the registration of pet dogs mandatory. He emphasised that these measures are essential for controlling the stray dog population and ensuring public safety.
Proposal for a Modern Dog Shelter
Ahluwalia also proposed the establishment of a modern dog shelter and care centre, referred to as a 'Dog Pool House', in Mohali. This facility would cater to the care, treatment, vaccination, sterilisation and rehabilitation of stray and abandoned dogs. According to Ahluwalia, such a facility would address the issue in a humane and scientific manner while ensuring public safety. He added that Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh has assured him of his personal attention to the matter.
Public Awareness and Safety Measures
Ahluwalia stressed the need for greater public awareness to prevent dog bite incidents. He advised citizens to avoid provoking, throwing stones at, or attempting to chase away stray dogs. The AAP leader reiterated that a combination of sterilisation, vaccination, registration and public cooperation is vital to mitigate the stray dog problem.
