Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday announced a significant expansion of the dairy sector in Ladakh, with plans to set up a 50,000-litre-per-day milk processing plant in Leh. The facility is expected to become operational by 2026, marking a major boost for the region's dairy industry.
Key Highlights of the Announcement
Speaking at an event in Leh, Shah emphasized the government's commitment to developing Ladakh's infrastructure and economic potential. The new plant will be established under the 'Ladakh Dairy Development Project' and aims to process locally produced milk, providing better market access to dairy farmers in the region.
The minister stated that the project would not only enhance milk production but also create employment opportunities for the local youth. He added that the government is working to make Ladakh self-sufficient in milk production and reduce dependence on imports from other states.
Support for Local Farmers
As part of the expansion, the government will also provide subsidies and technical assistance to dairy farmers. This includes improved cattle breeds, better feed, and training in modern dairy farming techniques. The initiative is expected to benefit thousands of families engaged in animal husbandry in Ladakh.
Shah also highlighted the role of cooperatives in the dairy sector, encouraging farmers to form producer groups to strengthen their bargaining power. He assured that the government would provide necessary support for establishing chilling centers and cold storage facilities in remote areas.
Infrastructure and Timeline
The 50,000-litre-per-day plant will be built on a 10-acre plot in Leh, with an estimated investment of Rs 50 crore. The project will be implemented by the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) in collaboration with the Ladakh administration. Construction is scheduled to begin later this year, with completion targeted for early 2026.
Once operational, the plant will produce a range of dairy products, including milk, yogurt, cheese, and butter, catering to local demand and potentially for export to other regions. The facility will also include a quality testing laboratory to ensure high standards.
Broader Impact on Ladakh
This dairy expansion is part of a larger effort to boost the agricultural and allied sectors in Ladakh, which has traditionally relied on tourism and defense-related activities. The government has also announced plans to improve cold storage infrastructure and market linkages for other horticultural products like apricots and apples.
Shah reiterated the central government's commitment to the all-round development of Ladakh, stating that the dairy project would transform the region's economy and improve the livelihoods of its people. He called upon local leaders and officials to work together for the successful implementation of the project.
