Amritsar Municipal Corporation Intensifies Crackdown on Encroachments
In a decisive move to reclaim public spaces and alleviate traffic woes, the Municipal Corporation (MC) of Amritsar has launched a comprehensive anti-encroachment drive across several pivotal locations in the city. This initiative, spearheaded by the MC Estate Wing, targets illegal setups that have been obstructing footpaths and roads, contributing to significant traffic congestion and pedestrian hazards.
Key Areas Targeted in the Drive
The special drive focused on major stretches including Ranjit Avenue, Ram Talai Mandir, and extended up to the bustling Mall Road. Civic teams were deployed to remove rehri-phadi vendors and temporary structures that had encroached upon footpaths and roadside areas. Additionally, goods displayed by shopkeepers on pavements and roads were cleared, providing much-needed relief to commuters and pedestrians navigating these busy zones.
Officials highlighted that in recent weeks, encroachments in these areas had surged, with vendors and businesses expanding onto public spaces. This not only hindered pedestrian movement but also led to frequent traffic snarls, exacerbating urban chaos. Acting on numerous complaints from residents, the MC team conducted on-the-spot actions to ensure the swift removal of these obstructions.
Supervision and Warnings Issued
The drive was conducted under the direct supervision of MC Secretary Sushant Bhatia, who emphasized the civic body's commitment to maintaining cleanliness and order in the urban environment. During the operation, officials issued stern warnings to violators, stating that strict legal action would be taken against anyone found encroaching on footpaths or roads in the future. Bhatia reiterated that footpaths are designated exclusively for pedestrians, and any occupation of these spaces constitutes a clear violation of municipal rules.
In a related effort, a similar anti-encroachment drive was executed on Monday near Guru Nanak Dev University, covering the UT Market and Mall Road areas. This operation resulted in the seizure of several rehri carts, further underscoring the MC's resolve to curb illegal vending activities.
Appeal for Civic Cooperation
Speaking on the issue, Sushant Bhatia appealed to shopkeepers and street vendors to adhere to regulations and refrain from occupying public spaces. He stressed that such cooperation is essential for maintaining the city's civic order and ensuring smooth traffic flow. The MC is conducting continuous drives under the directions of the MC Commissioner to foster a more organized and pedestrian-friendly urban landscape in Amritsar.
This proactive approach aims not only to address immediate congestion issues but also to promote long-term urban planning and safety. By clearing encroachments, the municipal corporation seeks to enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors alike, making Amritsar's streets safer and more accessible.
