Haryana Minister Anil Vij Takes Stern Action in Sirsa Tree-Cutting Case

In a decisive move at a public grievance meeting in Sirsa district, Haryana Cabinet Minister Anil Vij has ordered the suspension of two government officials over allegations of illegal tree cutting. The action underscores the state government's commitment to environmental protection and administrative accountability.

Suspensions Ordered During Grievance Hearing

During the hearing held on Friday, Minister Anil Vij directed the immediate suspension of Vijay Kumar, Executive Engineer of the Public Health Department, and Sunder Singh, an officer from the Forest Department. This disciplinary action is linked to a controversial tree-cutting incident in Kaluana village, located in the Dabwali area of Sirsa.

"Even if they go to court, the suspension order will stand. The police investigation will now determine who cut the trees and on whose instructions," Vij asserted, emphasizing the seriousness of the matter.

Legal Action Against Third Official

In addition to the suspensions, legal proceedings have been initiated against another official named Ajay. He faces allegations of submitting a false affidavit and withholding crucial information regarding the tree-cutting activities at the Kaluana waterworks. This step highlights the government's zero-tolerance policy towards misconduct and dishonesty among public servants.

Background of the Case

The tree-cutting issue was the first complaint addressed in the recent grievance meeting. It had previously been raised in an earlier session, prompting Vij to establish an inquiry committee led by the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC).

The ADC's investigation revealed significant irregularities:

  • Excessive tree cutting occurred at the waterworks site.
  • Approximately 12–13 trees with a thickness of 6–7 inches were felled.
  • Numerous smaller trees were also cut down.

The land in question is owned by the Public Health Department, which had authorized the Forest Department to cut 51 trees at the waterworks. However, complaints allege that an additional 31 trees were illegally removed, leading to the formal grievance submission.

Ongoing Police Investigation

Minister Vij has called for a thorough police probe to identify the individuals responsible for the unauthorized tree cutting and to uncover any potential instructions or collusion behind the act. This investigation aims to ensure justice and prevent similar environmental violations in the future.

The swift action taken by Anil Vij reflects the Haryana government's proactive approach in addressing public grievances and enforcing strict adherence to environmental regulations. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability in governance.
