Administration imposes restrictions on waterfall access
The Belagavi district administration has restricted access to several monsoon waterfalls, including the popular Gokak Falls, due to safety concerns during the rainy season. The decision comes after recent heavy rains caused rivers to swell, making the terrain hazardous for visitors.
Illegal entries continue despite warnings
Despite the restrictions, many tourists have illegally ventured into forest areas in recent years, often without knowledge of the difficult terrain, according to local officials. Authorities have urged the public to adhere to the rules to prevent accidents.
Gokak Falls, often called the 'Niagara of India,' is located on the Ghataprabha River in Belagavi district. The waterfall is currently in spate due to heavy rainfall in the river's catchment areas, as reported by Raju Gavali on 11 July 2026.
Safety measures and public advisory
The administration has deployed personnel to monitor entry points and enforce the ban. Tourists are advised to avoid visiting these areas until conditions improve. The restrictions aim to ensure public safety and prevent mishaps.
