Rainfall Deficit and Sowing Shortfall
The Kalyana Karnataka region, comprising seven districts, is grappling with a severe drought-like situation as it has received 36% below-normal rainfall this monsoon season. According to official data, sowing has been completed in only 11.76 lakh hectares against a target of 30.7 lakh hectares, reflecting the grim impact of the weak monsoon on agriculture.
Impact on Farmers and Reservoirs
Farmers in the region are in distress, with many unable to begin sowing due to insufficient soil moisture. The water level in the Tungabhadra reservoir in Koppal district has dipped significantly, raising concerns about drinking water and irrigation supply. Vittal Shastri reported that the reservoir's storage is far below normal for this time of year.
Government Response and Future Outlook
The state government has yet to declare a drought in the region, but officials are monitoring the situation closely. The weak monsoon has also affected other parts of Karnataka, with several districts reporting below-normal rainfall. Farmers are demanding immediate relief measures, including compensation for crop losses and input subsidies.
