Bengaluru authorities are stepping up their preparations for the upcoming monsoon season, with a particular focus on areas that are historically prone to flooding. In a recent review meeting, officials from the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), and other relevant departments assessed the city's readiness to handle heavy rainfall and potential waterlogging.
Key Measures Being Undertaken
The BBMP has identified 86 vulnerable spots across the city that are likely to experience flooding during heavy rains. To address these concerns, several measures are being implemented:
- Desilting of Storm Water Drains: The civic body has completed desilting work in 75% of the city's storm water drains. The remaining work is expected to be finished before the monsoon sets in.
- Installation of Pumps: High-capacity pumps are being installed at low-lying areas and underpasses to quickly remove accumulated water. These pumps will be monitored round-the-clock during the rainy season.
- Emergency Response Teams: Special teams have been formed to respond to flooding incidents. These teams will be equipped with boats, rescue equipment, and first-aid kits.
- Early Warning Systems: The KSNDMC will provide real-time rainfall data and flood warnings to the BBMP and other agencies. This will help in proactive decision-making and timely evacuation if needed.
Focus on Flood-Prone Areas
The authorities have prioritized areas that have experienced severe flooding in the past, such as KR Puram, Byappanahalli, and parts of the city's western suburbs. In these locations, additional measures are being taken, including the construction of new storm water drains and the deepening of existing ones. The BBMP has also appealed to residents to refrain from dumping waste into drains, which can cause blockages and exacerbate flooding.
Community Involvement
Residents are being encouraged to report waterlogging incidents through the BBMP's helpline and mobile app. The civic body has also launched awareness campaigns to educate the public about flood safety and preparedness. Local community groups are being roped in to assist with relief efforts during emergencies.
Challenges and Concerns
Despite the preparations, challenges remain. The rapid urbanization of Bengaluru has led to the encroachment of natural water bodies and wetlands, reducing the city's capacity to absorb rainwater. Environmentalists have called for stricter enforcement of regulations to protect these ecosystems. Additionally, the BBMP has acknowledged that some areas may still experience waterlogging due to inadequate drainage infrastructure.
