Bengaluru Minister Rules Out 24/7 Park Access Over Safety Issues

Bengaluru Transport Minister Firmly Rejects Proposal for 24/7 Park Access

In a decisive move, Bengaluru's Transport Minister and BTM Layout MLA, Ramalinga Reddy, has categorically ruled out the possibility of opening public parks throughout the entire day. During a recent inspection of eight parks in his constituency, Reddy emphasized that any such initiative would inevitably lead to the deterioration of these vital green spaces.

Recent Horticultural Upgrades and Maintenance Concerns

The minister conducted his inspection on Monday, focusing on parks where comprehensive horticultural work had recently been finalized. A total of eleven parks across the area have undergone a significant horticultural revamp, with new saplings planted following the completion of essential civil infrastructure projects.

When questioned by The Times of India about extending park hours ahead of the summer season, Reddy dismissed the idea as entirely impractical. "If parks are to be maintained well, the restricted timings have to continue. In my experience, it is not practical for parks to be left open throughout the day," he asserted firmly.

Safety and Social Issues Cited as Primary Reasons

Reddy elaborated on his stance by highlighting specific social concerns that would arise from unrestricted access. He warned that keeping parks open beyond 11 AM would likely result in couples and drug addicts occupying these spaces, thereby discouraging families from visiting.

"If this happens, families will not be able to visit parks. The number of people going there will decrease," he claimed, underscoring the potential negative impact on community usage and safety.

Activist Campaign for Extended Hours Meets Resistance

This position directly contradicts an ongoing campaign led by local activists, who have been advocating for parks to be accessible from 5 AM to 10 PM. Activists argue that extended hours are crucial for gig workers, professionals, and street vendors who need these spaces to rest and relax during their demanding schedules.

However, Reddy remains unconvinced, pointing to additional maintenance challenges. He expressed concerns that allowing eating in parks would lead to increased litter and dirt, which could drive away regular visitors. "This will turn away regular visitors. We have designed spaces for activities like yoga. Other activities will ruin this," he explained, emphasizing the need to preserve the intended peaceful and clean environment of these green zones.

The debate over park timings in Bengaluru continues to highlight the delicate balance between public accessibility and the preservation of urban green spaces, with Reddy's firm stance setting a clear precedent against 24/7 access.
