BECC Invites Tenders for 15 Skywalks Under DBFOT Model
The Bengaluru East City Corporation (BECC) has invited tenders for the construction of 15 skywalks across its jurisdiction. The projects will be executed on a Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) basis, allowing private partners to design, fund, and maintain the structures for a concession period before transferring them to the corporation.
Skywalks to Address Pedestrian Safety and Traffic Flow
These skywalks are part of a broader push by Bengaluru's civic bodies to improve pedestrian infrastructure and reduce accidents. According to BECC officials, the locations were identified based on high footfall areas near bus stops, metro stations, and major intersections. The initiative aims to separate pedestrian movement from vehicular traffic, thereby enhancing safety and easing congestion.
DBFOT Model Attracts Private Investment
The DBFOT model is expected to attract private players who will bear the upfront construction costs in exchange for advertising and maintenance rights. BECC has set a deadline for bid submissions, with construction expected to begin within six months of awarding the contract. Each skywalk will be designed to meet accessibility standards, including ramps and elevators for the differently abled.
Part of Larger Pedestrian Infrastructure Upgrade
This development aligns with Bengaluru's comprehensive mobility plan, which includes footpath expansions, signal-free corridors, and pedestrian plazas. The city has seen a rise in road accidents involving pedestrians, prompting authorities to fast-track such projects. Once completed, the 15 skywalks are expected to benefit thousands of commuters daily, particularly in crowded commercial and transit hubs.
