Bengaluru's Kadirenahalli Faces Unrelenting Garbage Menace
Residents and road users in Kadirenahalli, located in south Bengaluru's Banashankari area, continue to endure severe inconvenience due to persistent garbage problems. The situation shows no signs of improvement, with black spots marring the landscape along the Outer Ring Road stretch from the Geological Survey of India building to Kadirenahalli Park.
Failed Measures and Civic Neglect
Green nets installed by the Bengaluru South city corporation have proven ineffective in stopping litterbugs from dumping garbage and debris recklessly. This is particularly evident at Kadirenahalli Cross, where the problem remains rampant. Footpaths along the compound walls near the Kadirenahalli underpass are littered with waste at multiple points, making them unusable for pedestrians.
Black spots appear regularly until the Devegowda petrol bunk, creating an eyesore and health hazard. A local hospital pharmacist near Kadirenahalli Park expressed frustration, stating that complaints have yielded no results. "We complained, but the problem persists. Patients coming to our hospital are also inconvenienced because of this," the pharmacist told TOI.
Overflowing Kiosks and Health Concerns
The 'Kasa Kiosk' collection centre, opened about a month ago in front of Kadirenahalli park, is already overflowing. Locals report that it remains shut for most of the day, exacerbating the issue. "We are affected by the smell from the kiosk, which remains shut for most of the day," added the pharmacist.
This kiosk operates for only four hours each in the morning and evening, insufficient for the area's needs. Chandana, who works at a medical and surgical equipment store, highlighted the mosquito menace. "We keep our store doors closed but still suffer from mosquito bites. Our customers also complain the surroundings are unclean," she said.
Daily Cleanup Efforts Fall Short
Civic workers clear some garbage every morning, but accumulation happens quickly. Chandana pointed out that many residents, especially those in paying guest accommodations, do not segregate domestic waste. "They dump it here from their vehicles. Installing bins here might help transfer the garbage every day in an efficient manner," she suggested.
Naveen Kumar, who runs an automobile spares store at Kadirenahalli Cross, cited a lack of coordination among civic workers. "Pourakarmikas who sweep the roads say it is not their responsibility to clear garbage dumped here. The entire stretch is now filled with black spots," he explained.
Administrative Boundaries and Ongoing Struggles
This problematic stretch was part of the Banashankari Temple and Kumaraswamy Layout wards under the erstwhile BBMP. Under the Bengaluru South Corporation, it now falls at the boundaries of Yarab Nagar, Kadirenahalli, and Gowdana Palya wards. The entire area is part of the Padmanabhanagar assembly constituency, yet solutions remain elusive.
Residents continue to suffer from the stench, mosquito infestations, and unsanitary conditions, calling for urgent and coordinated action from civic authorities.
