In a significant move to ease commuter movement on Sachivalaya Marg, one of Bhubaneswar's busiest thoroughfares, the Public Works Department (PWD) has announced plans to create a dedicated corridor between Airport Square and Acharya Vihar Square.
Project Overview
The plan involves widening the approximately 6-kilometer stretch from the current four lanes to six lanes. This road houses major institutions such as the State Assembly and the State Secretariat (Lok Seva Bhavan), along with other key government offices. The project will also include separate pedestrian walkways and improved parking facilities.
Key Features: Underpasses at Major Junctions
One of the standout features is the development of underpasses for vehicles at critical intersections, including AG Square, Capital Hospital Square, and Airport Square. These underpasses are designed to ensure hassle-free movement for different sections of commuters, reducing congestion and travel time.
Government Approval and Timeline
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi recently reviewed the ambitious plan during a high-level meeting. Officials briefed him on the status and execution strategy for the dedicated corridor, along with other development projects. According to the minutes of the meeting, the CM was informed that the works department will undertake the execution of the Acharya Vihar Square to Airport Square corridor, including the underpasses, during the 2026-27 fiscal year.
Significance of Sachivalaya Marg
Sachivalaya Marg is considered the most important stretch in the city, witnessing frequent movement of VIPs and VVIPs due to the presence of the assembly, secretariat, state guest house, and other major government offices. Major intersections such as Institute of Engineers Square, Rabindra Mandap Square, and Housing Board Square are already equipped with smart traffic signals to ensure seamless vehicle movement.
Implementation Agency
The Odisha Bridge and Construction Corporation Ltd (OBCC) will spearhead the project. OBCC Managing Director Anupam Saha stated that a detailed project report will be prepared after a feasibility study of the entire stretch. Officials noted that sufficient government land is available on both sides of Sachivalaya Marg for the widening work, which was kept in reserve for future expansion, ensuring smooth execution.
