The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated a comprehensive renovation of all 184 parks under its jurisdiction to improve green spaces and amenities. Among these, 19 parks will undergo complete renovation, while the remaining will receive partial and minor repairs.
Horticulture Upgrades and Disaster Resilience
BMC officials stated that the renovation drive includes horticulture upgrades. A BMC officer explained, “We have planted shrubs and plants in a manner that minimizes damage during natural disasters, considering Odisha’s vulnerability to cyclones.”
Infrastructure Repairs and Enhancements
Additional Commissioner Kailash Chandra Dash highlighted that the work covers repair of boundary walls, development of internal pathways, painting of park boundaries, repair of main gates, and installation of signages.
Basic Services and Fitness Facilities
The civic body is also strengthening basic services in parks. Electricity and water connections have been provided in 144 parks. Fitness facilities have been expanded, with 127 open-gym equipment units installed across 59 parks.
BMC officials noted that the expanding green cover has enhanced the city’s liveability, with larger parks serving as recreation and fitness hubs, particularly where open gyms have been installed. Over the past six years, the city’s park network has grown significantly. Previously, around 60 parks were managed jointly by BMC and the Bhubaneswar Development Authority; now, 184 parks are under BMC’s control.
