BMTC's December Crackdown Nets Rs 6.3 Lakh in Fines from Ticketless Passengers
In a significant enforcement drive, the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has imposed substantial penalties on passengers flouting ticketing rules. During December 2025, line-checking officials collected fines totalling Rs 6.3 lakh specifically from individuals travelling without valid tickets on city buses.
Widespread Inspections Reveal High Non-Compliance
BMTC inspection squads conducted rigorous checks across the city's bus network, scrutinizing over 18,400 bus trips throughout the month. These efforts led to the detection of 2,801 passengers who were found travelling without proper tickets. The scale of these inspections highlights the corporation's commitment to ensuring fare compliance and maintaining revenue integrity.
Conductors Also Face Scrutiny for Lapses
Beyond passenger penalties, the enforcement action extended to BMTC staff as well. Cases were registered against 1,748 conductors for various operational lapses during the same period. This dual focus on both passengers and personnel underscores a comprehensive approach to improving service standards and accountability within the public transport system.
Seat Reservation Violations Add to Fine Collection
Officials also targeted violations of seating rules designed for passenger safety and convenience. Specifically, 250 male passengers were fined for occupying seats reserved for women. These penalties, amounting to Rs 25,000, were levied under sections 177 and 94 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, reflecting legal enforcement of gender-specific seating provisions.
Total December Fines Reach Nearly Rs 6.6 Lakh
Combining all categories of violations, BMTC collected a total of Rs 6,59,865 in fines from 3,051 passengers across Bengaluru in December 2025. This substantial sum represents the financial impact of non-compliance and the effectiveness of the corporation's monitoring initiatives.
BMTC Issues Advisory to Avoid Penalties
In a press release following the enforcement drive, BMTC urged all passengers to carry valid tickets, day passes, or monthly passes while travelling on its buses. This advisory aims to prevent future penalties and promote a culture of lawful travel, ensuring smooth operations and fair access for all commuters.
