In a significant push for Coimbatore's ambitious round-the-clock drinking water supply initiative, the city corporation has commenced work on laying the most critical segment of the main feeder line. The long-awaited activity began at the busy Sungam Junction on Trichy Road after the project finally received the necessary green light from the National Highways authorities.
Night Work to Minimize Public Disruption
The actual construction work kicked off on Monday night. Officials are focusing on two key stretches simultaneously. At Sungam junction, workers are laying a 300-meter segment of the main feeder line along the National Highway. Concurrently, a 600-meter section is being installed on the adjoining Olymbus Road. To ensure minimal inconvenience to the daily flow of traffic and the public, the entire operation is being conducted exclusively during night hours.
A Major Milestone for Water Connections
Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner, M Sivaguru Prabakaran, highlighted the importance of this specific stretch. He stated that its successful completion will be a game-changer, enabling the civic body to commission approximately 15,000 house service connections. These connections will be fed by five major overhead tanks linked to this feeder line.
The commissioner confirmed that the work has been expedited and is on a tight deadline. The entire laying and restoration work at both Sungam Junction and Olymbus is expected to be wrapped up by Friday. Following this, the corporation will conduct a crucial pressure test on the newly laid pipeline to ensure its integrity and readiness.
Next Phase Awaits at Lanka Corner
Once the current phase is successfully tested and commissioned, the focus will shift to the next logical step in the pipeline network expansion. Commissioner Prabakaran announced that work on laying the main feeder line will subsequently be taken up at Lanka Corner, further extending the reach of the 24x7 water supply project across more neighbourhoods of Coimbatore.
This progress marks a vital step forward in resolving the city's water supply challenges. The strategic night-time execution and clear deadlines reflect the administration's intent to balance infrastructure development with public convenience, bringing Coimbatore closer to its goal of uninterrupted tap water for all residents.
