Delhi Jal Board Updates NGT on Janakpuri Sewer Line Progress, Targets April Completion

The urgency of this infrastructure project stems from a formal complaint filed last year by the Residents' Welfare Association of A-1 Block, Janakpuri. The association alerted the NGT that their drinking water supply was heavily contaminated with sewage, posing significant health risks to the community. In response, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) conducted multiple water sample tests from June to July, which consistently detected the presence of coliform and E. coli bacteria. These findings confirmed the contamination, highlighting the dire need for immediate remedial action.

In its report dated March 3, the DJB acknowledged that the progress of the sewer line work has been slower than anticipated. The board cited the imposition of restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan's Stage III and IV from November 2025 to January 2026 as a major hindrance. These pollution control measures, while necessary for environmental reasons, adversely affected the pace of construction, leading to significant delays in the project timeline.

To compensate for the lost time and expedite the remaining work, the DJB has deployed additional manpower, machinery, and other essential resources at the site. The board is now making concerted efforts to complete the installation of the remaining sewer lines by the revised deadline of April 30.
