Delhi PWD Initiates Major CCTV Network Overhaul to Enhance City Surveillance

In a significant move to bolster public safety, the Delhi government's Public Works Department (PWD) has announced plans to comprehensively review and upgrade the extensive network of approximately 2.7 lakh CCTV cameras installed throughout the capital. This initiative aims to increase the effectiveness of the surveillance system, addressing concerns over aging equipment and security vulnerabilities.

Comprehensive Review of Camera Network

The PWD will conduct a thorough examination of the existing CCTV infrastructure, focusing on key aspects such as camera positioning, angles, working conditions, and coverage areas. This review is designed to optimize the surveillance system, ensuring it meets the city's evolving security needs. According to officials, the process will involve assessing whether the cameras are evenly distributed across Delhi to provide comprehensive monitoring.

Replacement of Outdated Chinese Cameras

A critical component of this overhaul is the replacement of old cameras installed during the first phase of the project, which began in 2018. PWD Minister Pravesh Verma highlighted that many of these initial cameras are nearing the end of their operational lifespan. "Many of the cameras installed in the first phase are now becoming old," Verma stated. "There are also security concerns as these are SIM-based Chinese cameras. So, we will replace these with new cameras whenever needed." This move addresses both functional obsolescence and potential security risks associated with foreign-made equipment.

Expert Consultation for Future Enhancements

Before proceeding with additional installations, the government plans to appoint an expert consultant to conduct a detailed study of the current PWD CCTV network. This study will analyze the system from a fresh perspective, emphasizing:

  • Optimal utilization of existing resources
  • Identification of actual surveillance needs
  • Strategies to enhance the role of cameras in crime prevention

The consultant's findings are expected to guide future upgrades and ensure that the surveillance infrastructure aligns with modern security standards. The two-phase installation process, initiated in 2018, has seen widespread deployment, but the PWD acknowledges that timely replacements are essential to maintain efficacy.

This overhaul reflects the Delhi government's commitment to leveraging technology for urban safety, with a focus on proactive measures to prevent crime and improve public security across the metropolis.
