Delhi PWD Initiates Major Drain Desilting Project Ahead of Monsoon Season
The Public Works Department (PWD) of Delhi has announced a comprehensive maintenance project to desilt drainage systems across northwest Delhi. This initiative, with an estimated budget of Rs 4 crore, is strategically timed to commence in March, ensuring preparedness before the monsoon rains arrive.
Scope and Coverage of the Desilting Operation
The project will target drains along 61 key roads in the northwest region, encompassing both residential neighbourhood drains and major stormwater carriers. Notable corridors included in this extensive exercise are TV Tower Road, Muni Maya Ram Marg, Outer Ring Road, and Power House Road. A PWD official confirmed that the proposal was finalized well in advance this year, highlighting a proactive approach to urban infrastructure management.
The primary objective is to maintain clear stormwater channels, thereby mitigating risks of waterlogging and associated traffic disruptions during heavy rainfall. In addition to desilting, the project will involve replacing damaged or missing manhole covers, enhancing overall safety and functionality of the drainage network.
Addressing Critical Infrastructure Challenges
Arterial roads in northwest Delhi, such as stretches of Outer Ring Road, are particularly prone to drainage issues due to high traffic volumes and commercial activities. These factors accelerate the accumulation of waste in drainage lines, leading to frequent blockages. Historically, clogged drains have been a significant contributor to waterlogging and traffic snarls during monsoon seasons, causing inconvenience to residents and commuters alike.
By undertaking this pre-monsoon desilting drive, the PWD aims to enhance the efficiency of stormwater management systems. This effort is part of broader measures to improve urban resilience and ensure smoother mobility in one of Delhi's bustling districts.
