Delhi Plans New Pedestrian Bridge at Monastery Market
New Delhi's Public Works Department is taking action to protect pedestrians. They will build a foot overbridge at Monastery Market in Budh Vihar. This location sits on Ring Road, very close to ISBT Kashmere Gate.
A Busy Stretch Needs Safety Solutions
The area becomes especially crowded on weekends. Cafe visitors, tourists, and local residents flock to monasteries and eateries. People often spill onto the road. They try to cross Ring Road quickly, dodging fast-moving vehicles. This creates chaotic and dangerous situations.
The new foot overbridge aims to solve this problem. It will give people a safe, elevated way to cross. Officials also expect it to help traffic move more smoothly.
Detailed Planning and Structural Checks
The project carries an estimated cost of Rs 3 crore. Civil work accounts for Rs 2.2 crore. Electrical installations will cost Rs 79 lakh.
An official explained the detailed approach. "This is more than just basic construction," he said. The plan includes new building work, safety audits, and structural strengthening. The goal is to create a bridge that lasts for years under heavy use.
Before full construction begins, contractors must complete a thorough structural audit. They will follow guidelines from the Central Public Works Department and Indian Standard Codes.
The audit process involves several key steps:
- On-site inspections and precise measurements
- Taking GPS-tagged photographs for documentation
- Assessing the stability of the foundation
Engineers will analyze any weaknesses they find. They will then recommend specific repairs or strengthening methods if needed.
Features for Comfort and Accessibility
The bridge design focuses on user comfort and safety. It will feature watertight structural glazing and insulated double-glazed vision glass panels. These materials provide clear visibility while controlling heat, a vital consideration for Delhi's extreme summer temperatures.
Construction zones will have temporary barricades to keep the public safe. Finished walkways will use high-strength concrete paver blocks for long-lasting durability.
The project strongly emphasizes accessibility. It will include polycarbonate roofing and passenger lifts. These lifts will help elderly citizens and people with disabilities use the bridge easily.
The maintenance contract covers daily cleaning and operational checks for the lifts. Energy-efficient LED lighting will ensure good visibility during nighttime hours.
A Step Toward Safer Movement in the City
In a city where pedestrian needs are sometimes overlooked, this foot overbridge represents meaningful progress. It may not make travel faster, but it promises to make crossing Ring Road near Kashmere Gate significantly safer for everyone.
