Delhi Government Unveils Major Transport Infrastructure Proposals

The Delhi government has announced a comprehensive proposal to construct a 19.2-kilometer elevated road along the Yamuna River, stretching from Wazirabad to the DND Flyway, according to an official statement released on Sunday. This ambitious project is designed to alleviate traffic congestion and improve connectivity across the capital.

Phased Implementation of the Elevated Road

The proposed elevated road will be developed in three distinct phases to ensure systematic execution. The first phase will cover the stretch from Surghat to ISBT, followed by the second phase from ISBT to Sarai Kale Khan, and the final phase from Sarai Kale Khan to DND. In addition to this, the government has readied a proposal for a 2.62-kilometer flyover connecting Tripolia Gate to Barfkhana, further enhancing the road network.

Chief Minister's Review of Transport Projects

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta conducted a detailed review meeting with senior officials, including the Managing Director of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), to assess the progress of Delhi Metro and associated road and flyover projects. She emphasized that a modern and efficient public transport system remains a top priority for the government, aimed at reducing pollution and improving commuter convenience.

During the meeting, officials reported that while several projects are advancing steadily, any hurdles are being continuously identified and resolved to maintain momentum. The chief minister highlighted the importance of these initiatives in strengthening the city's transport backbone.

Metro Expansion: Phase IV and Beyond

Officials informed that a 104.45-kilometer network of Metro rail with 81 stations is currently under construction. Work on Phase IV's priority corridors has accelerated, with overall physical progress reaching 79.57 per cent. Several major corridors are targeted for completion by December 2026, including:

  • Krishna Park Extension to Deepali Chowk (approximately 6.6 km)
  • Majlis Park to Derawal Nagar (3.5 km)
  • Derawal Nagar to R.K. Ashram (7.4 km)
  • Tughlakabad to Sangam Vihar (6.3 km)
  • Sangam Vihar to Saket G Block (4.3 km)
  • Saket G Block to Aerocity (12.6 km)

These corridors are expected to significantly enhance connectivity across various parts of Delhi, as stated in a Delhi CMO release. Additionally, work has commenced on the remaining three Phase IV corridors—Lajpat Nagar to Saket G Block (8.38 km), Inderlok to Indraprastha (12.37 km), and Rithala to Kundli (26.46 km)—with a completion target set for March 2029.

Phase V(A) Projects and Integrated Road Works

Simultaneously, Phase V(A) projects have been initiated, featuring key segments such as R.K. Ashram Marg to Indraprastha (9.91 km), Aerocity to IGI Airport Terminal 1 (2.26 km), and Tughlakabad to Kalindi Kunj (3.9 km). Alongside metro expansion, several integrated road and flyover projects are progressing rapidly.

A 2.16-kilometer double-decker flyover from Azadpur to Tripolia Chowk, designed to accommodate both metro and road traffic, is approximately 73 per cent complete, with a project cost of Rs 264.27 crore. Another 1.40-kilometer flyover from Yamuna Vihar to Bhajanpura, costing Rs 291.17 crore, has reached around 85 per cent completion.

In South Delhi, major works are underway along MB Road, including a 2.48-kilometer six-lane flyover from Saket G Block to Sangam Vihar, along with underpasses at Saket G Block and Ambedkar Nagar. This project, estimated at Rs 694.98 crore, has achieved about 40 per cent progress so far.

Meanwhile, design and alignment work are in progress for a 2.53-kilometer flyover from Maa Anandmayee Marg to Pul Prahladpur. Challenges such as obtaining ASI permissions, tree cutting, and land acquisition are being actively addressed to ensure timely execution.

Impact on Delhi's Transport Ecosystem

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that the expansion of the Delhi Metro and its integrated road network will fortify the city's transport infrastructure, making commuting faster and more convenient while substantially reducing congestion and pollution levels. These initiatives underscore the government's commitment to sustainable urban development and enhanced public mobility.
