Major Railway Expansion Approved for Telangana's Busiest Corridor

In a significant infrastructure development, the Central Government has given its approval for the construction of a fourth railway line on the heavily utilized Grand Trunk route between Kazipet and Balharshah in Telangana. This strategic move is designed to substantially enhance both passenger transportation and freight logistics across the region.

Project Details and Strategic Importance

The ambitious project will cover approximately 250 kilometers and is projected to involve an investment of around 3,000 crore rupees. This particular stretch is recognized as one of the most congested corridors within the entire Indian Railways network, facilitating the movement of hundreds of trains that connect northern and southern India. The route traverses through both Telangana and Maharashtra, serving as a critical arterial link.

This new fourth line will seamlessly integrate with the proposed fourth line between Secunderabad and Kazipet. Once completed, this integration will create a continuous four-track corridor extending roughly 350 to 400 kilometers, dramatically improving rail capacity and efficiency.

Current Operations and Expected Benefits

The existing section is currently operating at near-full capacity, managing a complex mix of passenger and freight services. Numerous important trains originating from cities like Jammu, Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Raipur, Lucknow, and Delhi utilize this corridor to reach southern destinations such as Hyderabad, Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram, and Tirupati.

Presently, travel time between Secunderabad and Balharshah is approximately six hours, with premium services like the Rajdhani Express completing the journey in nearly five hours. The operationalization of the fourth line is expected to reduce travel time to under four hours, as trains will be able to run more smoothly at speeds of up to 130 kilometers per hour.

Project Status and Official Statements

Railway officials have confirmed that preliminary yard layouts have already received clearance from the operations wing. Survey work is currently in progress. Upon completion of this survey, a detailed project report (DPR) will be prepared and submitted to the Railway Board for final approvals. The exact land acquisition requirements will be determined following the finalization of the DPR.

According to the South Central Railway (SCR), the Kazipet-Balharshah fourth line is a pivotal initiative for which the final location survey (FLS) has already secured approval from the Ministry of Railways. A senior SCR official emphasized the project's broader impact, stating, "This line will provide crucial support to key industries such as cement and thermal power, while significantly boosting the transportation of essential commodities like coal, cement, and clinker. The enhanced rail infrastructure will strengthen both freight logistics and passenger services across the corridor."

Context: Ongoing Third-Line Project

This approval comes alongside progress on another major expansion. After nearly a decade of construction work, the third-line project on the Grand Trunk route between Balharshah and Gudur—spanning 742 kilometers—is nearing completion, with approximately 90% of the work already finished. SCR officials anticipate wrapping up the remaining work within the next few months.

To alleviate congestion on this vital national corridor, third-line projects between Kazipet-Balharshah, Kazipet-Vijayawada, and Vijayawada-Gudur were originally approved during the 2015-16 period, involving a total investment of 7,274 crore rupees. The new fourth line represents the next critical step in modernizing India's rail backbone.
