The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has filed a fresh application before the Supreme Court, seeking an extension of the deadline for holding elections to five city corporations in the Bengaluru region until December 31, 2026. The move comes as the GBA cites complexities related to the Karnataka State Industrial Regions (SIR) as a key reason for the delay.
Background of the Plea
In its application, the GBA has urged the apex court to modify its earlier order dated May 20, 2026, which set a deadline for conducting the civic polls. The authority now requests that the court extend the timeline to December 31, 2026, to allow sufficient time for addressing administrative and legal hurdles. The polls pertain to five city corporations, which are crucial for local governance in the Greater Bengaluru area.
Reasons for the Extension Request
The GBA has pointed to the Karnataka SIR as a primary factor necessitating the delay. The SIR involves the delineation of industrial regions, which has implications for the boundaries and electoral rolls of the city corporations. According to the GBA, resolving these issues is essential to ensure fair and transparent elections. The authority has emphasized that the extension will enable proper preparation, including the finalization of ward boundaries and voter lists.
“We have sought the modification of the May 20 order to extend the deadline to December 31, 2026, due to the complexities arising from the Karnataka SIR,” a GBA official stated. “This will allow us to conduct the polls in a manner that upholds democratic principles.”
Impact on Local Governance
The delay in holding elections has raised concerns about the continuity of civic administration in the five corporations. Currently, these bodies are being managed by appointed administrators, which some critics argue lacks the accountability of elected representatives. However, the GBA maintains that the extension is necessary to avoid legal challenges and ensure long-term stability.
According to sources, the Supreme Court is expected to hear the application in the coming weeks. The outcome will determine whether the polls proceed as per the original schedule or are postponed to the end of the year.
