Goa Digital Taxi Policy Set for Implementation Despite Union Resistance
In a significant development for Goa's transportation sector, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has confirmed that the Goa Digital Taxi Policy will be rolled out in the coming fiscal year. This announcement comes despite staunch opposition from the state's taxi unions, who have been vocal in their resistance to the government's digital initiatives.
Budget Declaration and Union Concerns
During his budget speech, CM Sawant described the policy as "progressive" and emphasized its benefits for both tourists and local residents. "The progressive Goa Digital Taxi Policy, aimed at modernising transport through technology-driven and citizen-centric services, will be implemented from this year," Sawant declared.
However, the path to implementation faces hurdles. On Thursday, Sawant met with representatives from 36 taxi associations to present the draft Digital Taxi Policy. The taxi operators were adamant in their demand that the government must first scrap existing platforms GoaMiles and the Goa Taxi app before any discussions about the proposed digital policy could proceed.
Government Response and Committee Formation
In response to these concerns, the government has constituted a 4-member committee headed by the deputy transport director. This committee has been tasked with examining the issues raised by Goa's taxi associations and will meet on Monday to accept inputs from all stakeholders.
The Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG) has also weighed in on the matter. TTAG spokesperson Aakash Madgavkar stated, "With regard to the Digital Taxi Policy, the Travel and Tourism Association of Goa would like to reiterate its stance on taxis in Goa. All apps should be allowed, and there should be affordable and transparent pricing for locals and tourists. The input of TTAG and other stakeholders should be taken while formulating this policy."
Policy Objectives and Future Outlook
The Goa Digital Taxi Policy is designed to bring uniformity and transparency to cab fares through a digital platform. This move is part of broader efforts to modernize the state's transportation infrastructure and enhance the experience for both residents and visitors.
Despite the current opposition, CM Sawant remains committed to the policy's implementation. The coming weeks will be crucial as the government committee engages with stakeholders and works to address the concerns raised by taxi unions while moving forward with this technology-driven initiative.
