Goa to Deploy AI-Powered Traffic Signals at 92 Locations in Major Road Safety Push
In a significant move to enhance road safety across the state, the Goa transport department, in close coordination with the Public Works Department (PWD), has announced plans to install artificial intelligence-based traffic signals equipped with cameras at 92 strategic locations during the initial phase of implementation. This initiative aims to strengthen enforcement mechanisms and reduce traffic violations through advanced technological interventions.
Technology-Driven Enforcement for Safer Roads
Transport Director Pravimal Abhishek made this announcement while addressing an event in Margao on Friday, emphasizing the department's commitment to leveraging modern technology for public safety. He explained that the introduction of AI-based cameras is designed to facilitate "technology-driven and evidence-based enforcement," ensuring a more systematic approach to monitoring traffic behavior.
The smart cameras will be capable of detecting a wide array of traffic violations autonomously, operating 24/7 without human intervention. Key offences that will be monitored include:
- Triple-seat riding on two-wheelers
- Number plate violations and tampering
- Other common traffic infractions that compromise road safety
Emphasizing Individual Responsibility in Road Safety
Abhishek underscored the importance of personal accountability in maintaining road safety, stating, "Road safety is an individual responsibility." He urged citizens to adopt basic safety practices as a fundamental duty, rather than relying on external enforcement. Essential measures highlighted include:
- Wearing seat belts consistently while driving
- Using helmets properly on two-wheelers
- Following lane discipline and traffic rules
- Adhering to prescribed speed limits on all roads
"There should not be a need for others to tell us our duty," he added, calling for a proactive approach from all road users.
Comprehensive Road Safety Strategy Beyond AI Signals
In a related development, Abhishek revealed that the Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC), in collaboration with the urban development department, has submitted a proposal to the Goa government for the procurement of nearly 200 additional electric vehicles. This move aligns with broader efforts to modernize public transport and promote sustainable mobility solutions across the state.
Furthermore, the PWD has identified several road accident black spots throughout Goa, where corrective measures are being planned to address infrastructure deficiencies and hazardous conditions. These interventions are expected to complement the AI-based enforcement system by improving road design and safety features.
Integrating Road Safety Education into School Curriculum
Recognizing that a large proportion of accidents result from human error, officials are also working to introduce road safety education into the school curriculum. This educational initiative aims to instill safe driving habits and awareness from a young age, fostering a culture of responsibility among future generations of road users.
Officials stated that the phased rollout of these measures is intended to create a holistic road safety framework that combines:
- Advanced enforcement through AI technology
- Public awareness and educational campaigns
- Infrastructure improvements and sustainable transport options
This multi-pronged strategy underscores Goa's commitment to reducing traffic accidents and enhancing overall road safety through innovation, education, and collaborative governance.
