Gujarat Government Unveils Digital Portal for Infrastructure Safety Monitoring
The Gujarat government announced on Tuesday the imminent launch of an asset safety monitoring portal, a centralized digital platform designed to ensure the safety of roads, bridges, buildings, and other public infrastructure across the state. This initiative aims to prevent infrastructure from becoming hazardous to public safety through integrated monitoring at the state level.
Comprehensive Digital Registration of Public Properties
Under a circular issued by the general administration department (GAD), more than 1.50 lakh state government assets will be registered on the portal. These include roads, bridges, government buildings, and various civic infrastructures. The portal will feature GIS-based locations, photographs, details of responsible officers, and special digital identities to enable scientific and continuous monitoring.
The government emphasized that this system will make future construction processes more data-driven, enhancing overall infrastructure management.
Automated Systems to Prevent Negligence
The asset safety management portal is equipped with an automated inspection calendar and a real-time alert system. These features are intended to eliminate negligence in reporting structural weaknesses, inspection delays, or repair needs. By compelling the administrative system to take timely action, the portal seeks to address safety concerns proactively.
This move comes in response to past incidents, such as the Gambhira bridge collapse near Vadodara in July 2025, where a 40-year-old structure collapsed, resulting in 22 fatalities and multiple vehicles falling into the Mahisagar river.
Operational Framework and Monitoring Protocols
Field officers will be responsible for uploading inspection reports and photographs to the integrated portal. District collectors and municipal commissioners will conduct regular reviews on a weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis. Additionally, a dedicated asset safety monitoring cell established within the GAD will perform daily state-level monitoring and provide regular reports to the chief secretary.
Comparison with Central Government Platforms
While the Union government operates several digital platforms with related objectives, the Gujarat system is distinct in its focus on ground-level safety inspections. For instance:
- The finance ministry's SAMPATI portal serves as an electronic asset register for central ministries but is not designed for safety inspections.
- The Union ministry of statistics and programme implementation (MoSPI)'s PAIMANA platform, launched in September 2025, tracks large central sector projects worth Rs 150 crore and above, primarily focusing on delays and cost overruns rather than structural safety.
In contrast, the Gujarat portal is tailored to address specific safety concerns, ensuring a more comprehensive approach to infrastructure management and public welfare.
