Gurgaon's Old Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road Plagued by Encroachment and Traffic Chaos
The Old Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road, particularly near the Industrial Development Colony (IDC), has become a daily nightmare for commuters due to rampant encroachment and illegal parking. This stretch, flanked by automobile showrooms and commercial establishments, is severely congested, with vehicles occupying most of the service road and leaving minimal space for traffic flow.
Service Road in Disrepair Exacerbates Commuter Woes
Residents have highlighted the deplorable state of the service lane, which features broken patches and uneven surfaces that force vehicles to slow down. Sandeep Paul, a regular commuter, described the situation: "The service road is almost unusable. Cars from showrooms and other businesses are parked throughout the day, leaving barely any room for movement. The poor road conditions make it worse, especially during rains."
Main Carriageway Narrowed by Flyover and Parking Issues
The main carriageway is similarly affected, with its width already reduced by the Sukhrali flyover. Illegal parking along the roadside further diminishes the effective space for moving traffic, leading to frequent jams. Kalyan Singh Sharma, a Sector 14 resident, noted: "A major bottleneck occurs where the flyover ends, as parked vehicles and merging traffic from the IDC area create gridlock."
Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) Responds with Action Plan
An MCG official acknowledged the issues and outlined corrective measures. "Work on improving IDC's internal roads has commenced, with remaining portions to be addressed alongside drainage development," the official stated. Enforcement will be intensified through coordination with traffic police to remove encroachments, issue notices, and impose challans on violators. Police deployment will also be ensured to maintain clear roads and smooth traffic movement.
The combination of illegal activities and infrastructure neglect underscores the urgent need for sustained civic intervention to alleviate the daily hardships faced by Gurgaon's residents.
