Chandigarh: Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has issued directives to prioritize the supply of drinking water across all parts of the state in view of the approaching summer season. He emphasized that all ponds, waterworks, and other reservoirs must be kept filled to prevent any shortage.
Review Meeting at Civil Secretariat
On Saturday, the Chief Minister reviewed the status of drinking water and agricultural irrigation water with officials from the Public Health Department, Irrigation Department, and other departments at the civil secretariat. He stressed that there should be no scarcity of drinking water or irrigation water in rural and urban areas during the summer months.
Key Directives Issued by CM
Saini directed that all waterworks and ponds connected to canals for drinking water should be kept filled. In areas where water supply relies on tube wells, any non-functional tube well must be repaired on a priority basis. If necessary, water should be supplied to people through tankers.
The Chief Minister also announced that a meeting with the Ministry of Jal Shakti regarding the Kishau and other water projects involving Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh will be held soon, with participation from officials of those states.
Water Situation in Bhakra Dam
During the meeting, officials informed the CM that the water situation in Bhakra Dam is quite favorable this year. The water level in the dam is currently 36 feet higher than usual. Haryana has utilized only 75-76% of its allocated share of water from Bhakra Dam so far.
Rural Waterworks Review
The CM also reviewed the availability of water in rural waterworks. Officials reported that the state has 4,000 single-village-based waterworks and 2,500 waterworks that cater to more than one village. All these waterworks are connected to canals and currently have sufficient drinking water available.
Canal Maintenance
Additionally, the Chief Minister reviewed canal cleaning, repair, and reconstruction works and directed that all such projects should be completed at a fast pace to ensure uninterrupted water supply.
