Haryana govt approves leasing railway land for Ambala road

Ambala: Haryana energy, transport and labour minister Anil Vij on Tuesday said the state government has approved leasing railway land for construction of a new road from Rangiya Mandi to GT Road in Ambala Cantonment.

The land will be taken on a 35-year lease, with the state paying around Rs 4 crore to the railways. He said work on the proposed road will begin soon.

In a parallel decision, the government has also approved transfer of land from the municipal council to the transport department for setting up a Driving Training and Research Institute (IDTR) and an Automated Vehicle Testing Station (ATS) at Shahpur in Ambala Cantonment.

Vij said both projects will be expedited now that approvals are in place. The proposed road, which will link the Rangiya Mandi overbridge with GT Road, will span around 550 metres and have a width of 10 metres. It will run alongside the dedicated railway freight corridor.

Once completed, the road is expected to improve connectivity and ease traffic congestion. It will provide a direct link from areas such as Sadar Bazaar and Mahesh Nagar to GT Road. At present, commuters access GT Road via Staff Road.

The minister said the IDTR and ATS will come up on around 13 acres in Shahpur, with the state already sanctioning Rs 11.49 crore for the project. The facilities are expected to generate employment and provide advanced training to youth. The automated testing station will also conduct fitness checks for about 300 vehicles a week, strengthening road safety and compliance.
