Indore Authorities Launch Industrial Pollution Crackdown After Water Scare
Indore authorities have launched a major crackdown on industrial pollution. This action follows the recent Bhagirathpura water contamination incident. That incident sharply focused public attention on polluted water supply issues across the city.
Strict Monitoring and Immediate Action
The Urban Administration Department directed stricter monitoring of industrial effluent discharge. Officials immediately stepped up inspections in industrial zones. They took action against units found violating pollution norms.
As part of this drive, the Madhya Pradesh Industrial Development Corporation issued notices. These notices went to nine industries in Pithampur's Sector 1 and Sector 2. Authorities allege these units released untreated effluents directly into a nullah.
Water samples drawn from the drain showed clear signs of contamination. This discovery triggered the enforcement action.
Official Statements and Zero Tolerance Policy
Himanshu Prajapati, executive director of MPIDC for the Indore region, confirmed the inspections. "Inspections are being carried out across industrial areas following directions from the urban administration department," he stated.
Prajapati explained the specific findings. "After water sample tests of the nullah revealed contamination, notices were served to nine industries in Pithampur. These industries were found not treating their effluents and releasing them directly into the drain."
He emphasized that similar inspections are now underway in other industrial areas. The goal is to check compliance with environmental regulations.
Authorities gave industries clear instructions. They must ensure proper operation of their effluent treatment plants. They must also strictly follow all discharge norms.
"There will be zero tolerance for untreated effluent discharge," Prajapati declared. "This is particularly important in the current context where water quality has become a major public concern."
Industry Association Steps In
The Pithampur Industries Association also took proactive steps. The association wrote to its member units. It urged them to ensure their effluent treatment plants remain functional. It also stressed the need for regular maintenance.
The association cautioned industries against any lapse. Such lapses could lead to pollution of local water bodies or drains.
Broader Effort to Protect Water Quality
Officials clarified that the Pithampur action forms part of a broader effort. The goal is to prevent industrial pollution from worsening water quality issues in and around Indore.
The Bhagirathpura incident placed significant pressure on civic and industrial authorities. They must now plug all potential sources of contamination. These sources include:

The industries department issued a general warning to units across all industrial areas. It directed them to immediately review their effluent management systems.
