Indore's Sari Walkathon Celebrates Women's Pivotal Role in City's Cleanliness Success
A unique 'Sari Walkathon' was organized in Indore on Sunday morning, aiming to highlight the crucial role of women in the city's sanitation achievements and spread the message of a plastic-free urban environment. The event was jointly organized by the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) and The World of Fitness, drawing significant participation from the community.
Combined Celebration of Women's Day and Environmental Sustainability
The walkathon was designed to mark a combined celebration of International Women's Day and environmental sustainability. It commenced from Nehru Stadium, proceeded through Daly College Road, and concluded back on the stadium premises. This route allowed participants to traverse key areas of the city, amplifying the event's visibility and impact.
More than 500 women, including IMC sanitation workers, participated in the walkathon, all draped in traditional saris. This attire choice symbolized cultural pride and unity among the participants, emphasizing the event's connection to local traditions while addressing modern environmental challenges.
Mayor's Pledge and Emphasis on Women's Contributions
Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava administered a solemn pledge to the participants, urging them to eliminate single-use plastic from their daily lives and adopt cloth bags as a sustainable alternative. In his address, the mayor highlighted that public participation and teamwork, particularly from women, are the foundational reasons why Indore continues to be a national leader in cleanliness.
"Today, aware women are giving a powerful message of boycotting single-use plastic by walking in saris alongside our Safai Mitra sisters," Mayor Bhargava stated. He described the event as a powerful symbol of female empowerment and social responsibility, underscoring how women ensure effective sanitation by separating wet and dry waste at home before it is collected by municipal vehicles.
Promoting the Waste to Best Campaign
The mayor also used the platform to encourage citizens to support the ongoing Waste to Best campaign. He appealed to residents to deposit unused items at the city's 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) centres, which are integral to bolstering environmental conservation efforts across Indore. This initiative aims to transform waste management into a resource-efficient process, further enhancing the city's sustainability credentials.
The Sari Walkathon not only celebrated the achievements of women in maintaining Indore's cleanliness but also served as a call to action for broader community involvement in environmental protection. By combining cultural elements with contemporary environmental goals, the event successfully fostered a sense of collective responsibility and highlighted the indispensable role of women in driving social and ecological change.
