Deputy Commissioner Anand Kumar Sharma and Karnal Municipal Corporation (KMC) Commissioner Saloni Sharma have instructed the construction agency to expedite work on the city's elevated flyovers, with a target to finish the project well before the January 2027 deadline. The directive was issued during a joint inspection of ongoing Smart City Mission projects, which included the elevated flyovers and other key infrastructure works.
Project Progress and Timeline
Officials informed the DC and Commissioner that approximately 80% of the elevated flyover project has been completed. Although the scheduled completion is January 2027, the agency expressed confidence in finishing the work two to three months ahead of schedule. The two flyovers, built using the single-pillar technique, are being developed at an estimated cost of around Rs 128 crore and will have a combined length of 3.280 km. A total of 85 pillars have been erected for the project.
Of the total length, about 900 meters extends from Committee Chowk to Club Market, while the remaining 2.380 km stretch lies between Haryana Nursing Home and the District Library. The DC emphasized the importance of maintaining work pace to ensure timely completion for public benefit.
Inspection of Other Smart City Projects
Following the flyover inspection, Dr. Sharma visited the under-construction Observation Home and Working Women Hostel at Shakti Colony. Officials reported that both projects, costing over Rs 17 crore, are in their final stages of completion. Additionally, the shopping complex developed under the Smart City Mission has been completed and will soon be handed over to the KMC.
“The construction agency has been instructed to maintain the pace of work and complete the project within the prescribed timeline so that the public could benefit from improved traffic management and smoother connectivity at the earliest,” said the DC.
Impact on Urban Infrastructure
The accelerated completion of these flyovers is expected to significantly improve traffic flow and connectivity in Karnal. The single-pillar technique used in construction minimizes land usage and reduces disruption to existing traffic during construction. With 80% of work already done, the remaining tasks include laying of the deck, installation of railings, and road markings. The agency is working in multiple shifts to meet the revised timeline.
The KMC is also focusing on other Smart City initiatives, including the development of pedestrian pathways, smart lighting, and public amenities near the flyover corridors. These efforts align with the broader goal of transforming Karnal into a model smart city under the central government's mission.
