The Karnataka government has launched the 'Praja Seva' department, a new initiative aimed at delivering government services directly to citizens' doorsteps. The department was inaugurated by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, who emphasized that the move is part of the state's commitment to making governance more accessible and efficient.
What is the Praja Seva Department?
The Praja Seva Department consolidates various citizen-centric services under one umbrella, allowing residents to apply for and receive services like caste certificates, income certificates, domicile certificates, and other essential documents without visiting government offices. The department will operate through a network of mobile service units and designated service centers across all districts.
According to the state government, the initiative aims to reduce the time and effort spent by citizens in procuring government documents. The department will also utilize a digital platform to track applications and ensure timely delivery.
Key Features and Implementation
The Praja Seva Department will function through a combination of physical and digital channels. Mobile vans equipped with necessary infrastructure will visit villages and urban wards on a scheduled basis. Citizens can also submit applications online via the department's portal or through Common Service Centres (CSCs).
Officials stated that the department will initially offer 15 high-demand services, with plans to expand to 50 services within the next year. Each service will have a defined turnaround time, and delays will result in automatic escalation to higher authorities.
Impact on Citizens
The initiative is expected to benefit over 3 crore residents across Karnataka, particularly those in rural and remote areas who often travel long distances to access government services. The government claims that the department will process over 1 lakh applications per month once fully operational.
Chief Minister Bommai said, "This department will ensure that no citizen has to run from pillar to post for essential documents. We are bringing the government to the people's doorstep."
Technology and Transparency
The department will use a real-time dashboard to monitor service delivery and citizen feedback. Applications can be tracked via SMS and email updates. The system is designed to minimize corruption and delays by automating workflow and reducing human intervention.
Revenue Minister R. Ashoka added, "The Praja Seva Department will set a new benchmark in e-governance. We are leveraging technology to make services faster, cheaper, and more transparent."
Future Plans
The government plans to integrate Aadhaar-based authentication and digital signatures to further streamline processes. Additionally, a mobile app will be launched to allow citizens to apply and track services from their smartphones.
The Praja Seva Department is part of the state's broader 'Nava Karnataka' vision, which aims to enhance public service delivery through innovation and citizen engagement.
