Karnataka Panel Vice-Chairman Stresses Decentralized Governance

Madikeri: Karnataka State Decentralization Planning and Development Committee vice-chairman DR Patil conducted a meeting with district and local authorities in the presence of Kodagu district minister NS Boseraju. The gathering underscored the necessity for systematic functioning of local and district bodies to promote decentralized governance.

People's Participation Essential for Development

Patil emphasized that people's involvement is crucial for implementing development projects. He noted that gram panchayats have been granted enhanced powers under the government and urged for their effective utilization. He directed concerned officials to form a 'Nere Hore' committee in every ward of city and town municipalities by June 15 to ensure public participation in decentralized governance.

Special Powers to Local Bodies

Patil observed that the government has extended special powers to local bodies to facilitate decentralized governance in rural and urban areas. He urged authorities to inform all voters about development schemes under the panchayat and devise an action plan based on people's needs. He stated that a decentralized administrative system would ensure women empowerment.

Minister's Remarks and Council Demands

Minister Boseraju said the government aims to promote a systemic development scheme and called for scientific implementation of projects. Madikeri City Municipal Council member Arun Shetty urged filling over 70% vacant posts in the council and expediting ongoing road works. Kodagu DC SJ Somashekar, SP Bindu Mani, and other officials were present.

This meeting marks a step towards strengthening grassroots democracy and ensuring that local bodies function effectively with active citizen engagement.
