Kochi Mayor Announces Progress on LED Streetlight Project After NHAI Approval

Kochi Mayor V K Minimol has announced that the Cochin Smart Mission Ltd (CSML) authorities will now take definitive measures to complete the long-delayed LED streetlight project across the city. This development comes after the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) finally granted a no-objection certificate (NOC), removing a significant bureaucratic hurdle that had been slowing down the installation process in certain areas.

Council Approves Payments to KSEB for Electricity Connections

In a crucial step forward, the corporation council held on Wednesday gave its formal approval for paying the necessary charges to the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB). This payment is essential for providing electricity connections to the newly installed streetlights in several locations throughout Kochi. Once the corporation settles these charges, the streetlights that have already been erected by CSML in various places, including West Kochi, will become fully functional, illuminating the city's streets effectively.

Addressing Defunct Streetlights and Operational Issues

According to reports from corporation councillors, many of the streetlights already installed by CSML in numerous parts of the city are currently defunct, leading to public inconvenience and safety concerns. K J Basil, a councillor from the Edakochi division, highlighted a specific issue: "In the Edakochi area, streetlights remain switched on during the daytime while they do not function at night," he stated, emphasizing the need for immediate rectification. This situation underscores the urgency of completing the project and ensuring proper maintenance to avoid such operational anomalies.

The delay in the LED streetlight project was primarily attributed to the slow process of obtaining sanction from the NHAI, which has now been resolved with the issuance of the NOC. With this clearance in place, CSML can proceed with the remaining installations and address the existing defects, aiming to enhance urban lighting and improve public safety in Kochi. The mayor's announcement signals a renewed commitment to infrastructure development, with the LED project expected to contribute to energy efficiency and better nighttime visibility across the city.
