Kochi's 50-Day Plan: Mosquito Control, Stray Dogs, Affordable Meals

Kochi Corporation Rolls Out Intensive 50-Day Action Plan

The Kochi Corporation has announced a comprehensive 50-day programme to tackle pressing urban issues. This initiative focuses on mosquito control, managing stray dogs, and introducing affordable meal services through Indira Canteens. Mayor V K Minimol revealed the plan, which builds upon previous efforts like Samridhi@Kochi.

Targeting Mosquito Menace with Scientific Methods

Mosquito control stands as a top priority for the new council. A detailed 50-day action plan will be crafted and executed across the city. Scientific fogging operations will cover all areas, with the corporation purchasing additional fogging machines and hiring more personnel to ensure thorough coverage.

Every two weeks, a dry day will be observed to eliminate stagnant water sources. A dedicated monitoring unit will oversee all mosquito control activities. Furthermore, Rs 5 lakh will be allocated to each division for cleaning small canals that hold stagnant water, addressing breeding grounds directly.

Enhancing Stray Dog Management Programmes

The Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme will receive significant upgrades. Necessary equipment and the services of qualified doctors and experts will be provided to improve effectiveness. Two new dog squad vehicles and fifteen new kennels will be established to support these efforts.

Expansion of the ABC centre at Brahmapuram is also planned. Funding for this project will come from BPCL's corporate social responsibility fund. Adjustments will be made to the ABC programme to align with the Supreme Court's recent verdict, ensuring compliance and enhanced animal welfare.

Launching Affordable Indira Canteens

Indira Canteens will be introduced to offer affordable meals to residents. In the initial phase, these canteens will operate in association with Samridhi@Kochi at two locations: North Paramara Road and Fort Kochi in West Kochi. They will serve breakfast and dinner at very low rates.

Future phases aim to reduce meal prices to just Rs 10 for breakfast and dinner. Plans include expanding Indira Canteens to all major centres across Kochi, making cheap and nutritious food accessible citywide.

Collaborative Implementation Approach

Mayor Minimol emphasized that the corporation will work in collaboration with various government agencies, public and private sector institutions, and social organizations. Resident associations will also play a key role in implementing 21 projects under the 21st council's agenda.

This 50-day programme represents a concerted effort to address long-standing urban challenges through structured, time-bound actions and community involvement.
