Lucknow Residents Take Infrastructure Matters Into Their Own Hands After Eight-Year Wait
In a striking example of civic frustration turning into direct action, the residents of Kalyani Vihar Colony in Indira Nagar, Lucknow, have decided to bypass municipal authorities and address a long-standing infrastructure issue themselves. After eight years of repeated pleas and unfulfilled promises, the community pooled resources to construct a patch of road and repair a damaged drain, spending a total of Rs 1.5 lakh.
Years of Neglect Lead to Community Initiative
The problem began with a broken drain that caused significant inconvenience and health hazards. According to local resident SP Mishra, "The broken drain led to waterlogging during the monsoon seasons. It frequently overflowed, spreading dirty water and creating serious sanitation concerns. Stagnant water also became a breeding ground for mosquitoes, and in one alarming incident, a cow even fell into the drain."
Despite numerous complaints and meetings with officials over the past eight years, no action was taken by the Lucknow Municipal Corporation or the local corporator. RK Sharma, another resident, explained, "We met officials several times and submitted formal complaints, but nothing moved beyond empty assurances. Finally, we realized that if we wanted the work done, we would have to fund it ourselves."
Residents Pool Funds for Essential Repairs
With no other solution in sight, four house owners in the vicinity came together to finance the project. They collectively contributed Rs 1.5 lakh to repair a 10-metre-long drain and pave approximately 28 metres of road that is 7 metres wide with cement. This initiative not only resolved the immediate issues of waterlogging and sanitation but also improved the overall accessibility and safety of the area.
Municipal Response Highlights Systemic Issues
When contacted, local corporator Ranjana Awasthi acknowledged the situation but cited financial constraints as the reason for the delay. "Most roads in the ward have been constructed, except for this small portion in Kalyani Vihar due to limited funds. We tried our best, but it is not possible to satisfy everyone," she stated. This response underscores broader challenges in municipal governance and resource allocation, where essential infrastructure projects often get delayed or neglected.
The residents' proactive approach serves as a powerful reminder of community resilience in the face of bureaucratic inertia. By taking matters into their own hands, they have not only solved a persistent problem but also set a precedent for other neighborhoods grappling with similar issues.
