Ahead of the crucial Swachh Bharat ranking survey, the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) has launched a strategic initiative to elevate urban hygiene standards across the city. The civic body has identified and will nominate 16 model wards to serve as benchmarks for cleanliness and civic management.
Blueprint for a Cleaner City
The ambitious plan involves selecting two wards from each of the city's eight municipal zones. These model wards will become the gold standard, focusing on critical areas like improved waste collection, systematic road and drain maintenance, and the complete elimination of open defecation. This pilot project is designed to create replicable templates of excellence that could eventually be expanded across the entire city if it delivers positive outcomes.
Municipal Commissioner's Vision for 100% Waste Collection
Municipal Commissioner Gaurav Kumar detailed the core objective of the initiative. "Our aim is to achieve 100% waste collection in these wards," he stated. The plan mandates that no household should hand over garbage to private collectors or resort to dumping it in vacant plots. All waste must enter the official municipal system.
Commissioner Kumar emphasized that civic infrastructure in these model areas will be maintained stringently as per guidelines. This includes drains, roads, and all other municipal services. He believes that once residents consistently use only the municipal waste collection system, collection timings and services will become regular and more efficient. This disciplined approach is expected to pave the way for a superior, comprehensive plan to transform Lucknow into a cleaner and greener city.
City-Wide Cleanup for PM's Visit
Simultaneously, the LMC is undertaking extensive cleaning drives along major routes, including the stretch from the airport to Prerna Sthal. These efforts are in preparation for an event to be inaugurated by the Prime Minister on December 25. The drives involve clearing garbage, debris, and construction waste from main roads. Additionally, the corporation is addressing public safety by repairing faulty streetlights and illuminating dark stretches to ensure well-lit pathways for citizens.
The nomination of these 16 model wards represents a focused attempt by Lucknow's civic authorities to climb the Swachh Bharat rankings by demonstrating tangible, ward-level excellence in urban management and sanitation.
