Madurai Chamber President Urges Metro Approval, Airport Upgrade & ASEAN Flights
Madurai Needs Metro, Airport Upgrade & ASEAN Flights: Chamber

In a strong appeal for urban development, the president of the Agri & All Trade Chamber, S Rethinavelu, has emphasized the urgent need for a modern and high-capacity public transport system in Madurai. He called for immediate approval of the long-awaited Madurai Metro rail project and a significant upgrade to the Madurai airport to meet growing demands.

Republic Day Address Highlights Key Demands

Rethinavelu unfurled the national flag at the Agro Food Trade Centre (AFTC) campus during the 77th Republic Day celebration on Monday. During his address, he outlined several critical infrastructure and connectivity proposals aimed at transforming Madurai into a more accessible and resilient city.

Push for Enhanced Air Connectivity

One of the key recommendations put forth by Rethinavelu is the inclusion of Madurai in the list of 18 Tier-II and Tier-III tourist cities recommended for direct ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) flight connectivity. He stressed that this should be implemented without the need for a bilateral air services agreement (BASA), which could streamline international travel and boost tourism and trade links with Southeast Asian nations.

Addressing Flooding Issues

Rethinavelu also drew attention to the pressing environmental and civic problems caused by the damage and disappearance of the northern and western bunds of the Nilayur Kanmoi (tank) near Thirupparankundram. He explained that during the rainy season, overflow from the tank inundates adjacent patta lands and residential areas such as Thanakkankulam, Thoppur, and Thirupparankundram, leading to significant disruption and property damage.

Proposed Solutions for Water Management

To mitigate these flooding risks and enhance water storage capacity, Rethinavelu proposed a comprehensive set of measures. These include:

  • Strengthening and raising the bunds of the Nilayur Kanmoi.
  • Constructing a road along the bund to improve accessibility and maintenance.
  • Desilting the tank to restore its original water-holding potential.

He asserted that these steps would not only prevent seasonal flooding but also contribute to better water conservation in the region.

Rethinavelu's statements underscore a broader vision for Madurai's development, focusing on improved transportation infrastructure, international connectivity, and sustainable environmental management to support the city's growth and resilience.
