Maharashtra Government Directs MMRDA to Appoint Consultant for Comprehensive Mumbai Traffic Plan
In a significant move to address the chronic traffic woes of India's financial capital, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced on Sunday that the state government has issued a directive to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The authority has been instructed to appoint a specialized consultant tasked with preparing a comprehensive and detailed plan aimed at easing traffic congestion across the entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
Consultant to Study Road Widening, Ring Roads, and Traffic Flow
Speaking at a property exhibition organized by the MCHI-CREDAI Kalyan-Dombivli unit in Kalyan, Deputy CM Shinde elaborated on the consultant's mandate. The appointed expert will conduct an in-depth study to identify critical areas requiring intervention. This includes pinpointing locations where roads need to be widened, determining where new ring roads are necessary, and proposing a suite of measures designed to make overall traffic movement significantly smoother and more efficient.
"The consultant will study where roads need to be widened, where ring roads are required and suggest measures to make traffic movement smoother," Shinde stated. "The ultimate aim of this initiative is to substantially reduce travel time for millions of commuters, improve the efficiency of the region's transport network, and ensure people can reach their workplaces on time and consequently have more quality time to spend with their families."
Developers Raise Concerns Over Redevelopment Projects
During the same event, local developers and builders seized the opportunity to highlight a pressing issue concerning urban renewal. They raised serious concerns over the redevelopment of dilapidated and old buildings in the Kalyan-Dombivli area. The core of their demand centered on the need for additional Floor Space Index (FSI) on par with the provisions available in neighboring Thane and Mumbai.
The developers argued that without this enhanced FSI, redevelopment projects in Kalyan-Dombivli remain financially unviable, stalling crucial urban regeneration and housing improvements. In response to this persistent demand from the real estate sector, Deputy Chief Minister Shinde assured the attendees that the state government would soon convene a high-level meeting specifically to deliberate on this critical issue and explore potential solutions.
New Connector Bridge to Link Kalyan with Samruddhi Mahamarg
In another major infrastructure announcement aimed at boosting connectivity, Eknath Shinde revealed plans for the construction of a new connector bridge. This proposed bridge is designed to link Kalyan directly with the prestigious Samruddhi Mahamarg (expressway), a flagship project intended to enhance connectivity across Maharashtra. This direct link is expected to provide a significant boost to regional connectivity, reduce travel time for long-distance commuters and freight movement, and stimulate economic activity in the Kalyan region by integrating it more seamlessly with the state's major expressway network.
The series of announcements made by the Deputy Chief Minister underscore a multi-pronged approach by the Maharashtra government, focusing on both immediate traffic decongestion through a expert-led plan and longer-term urban development and connectivity projects to address the growing infrastructure demands of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
