For more than two years, Christopher “Chris” Francisco quietly followed a routine that many people in his hometown did not fully understand. The 32-year-old from Balete, Aklan, would often ask neighbours and acquaintances for just ₱5 at a time, politely declining larger amounts. To some, it seemed unusual. To Chris, it was part of a carefully planned mission. By 2022, he had accumulated enough savings to purchase 160 boxes of crayons, which he personally donated to pupils at Calizo Elementary School and students at Calizo National High School. His gift was not funded by wealth, sponsorships or public campaigns. It came from years of patience and determination.
How Chris Francisco turned years of saving into a colourful gift for students
Residents of Balete had grown accustomed to seeing Chris ask for ₱5 coins. According to school officials, he rarely accepted more than that amount and remained committed to his modest savings habit for over two years. The purpose behind those small contributions only became clear when he arrived at local schools carrying sacks filled with crayons. His donations included 80 boxes of crayons for Calizo Elementary School and another 160 boxes for Calizo National High School. Teachers later revealed that many pupils came from families with limited resources, making basic classroom materials difficult to replace. Chris's contribution ensured that children had access to fresh art supplies as face-to-face classes resumed.
The lifelong learner who never stopped valuing education
Chris's connection to local schools extended far beyond his donation. Despite only completing the first grade, he maintained a strong interest in learning and frequently visited school libraries to read. Teachers noted his fascination with encyclopaedias and educational materials, describing him as intellectually curious and eager to expand his knowledge. His donation reflected that appreciation for education. Alongside the crayons, he also provided periodic tables for secondary school students, demonstrating a desire to support both creativity and academic learning. Research consistently highlights the value of art materials in childhood development. According to the official guidance of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), drawing, colouring and creative activities help children develop fine motor skills, self-expression and early problem-solving abilities. Access to basic resources such as crayons can therefore play an important role in classroom engagement and learning outcomes.
Why educators were moved by Chris's act of generosity
Teachers at both schools described the donation as unexpected and emotional. Principal Juliet Justo said staff members were overwhelmed by the effort behind the gift, particularly after learning how long Chris had worked towards his goal. She publicly thanked him and praised his concern for children who might otherwise struggle to obtain school supplies. “We were moved to tears by the unknown feelings... he cares about children, especially those who cannot afford to buy these things that most children use every day. He made a huge effort,” Principal Juliet Justo told ABS-CBN. One of the most revealing comments came from Chris himself. Reflecting on his donation, he expressed a simple hope that students would appreciate the crayons and make good use of them in their studies. His focus remained on the children rather than on any recognition he received. The schools later presented him with certificates of appreciation in recognition of his contribution to local education. What began as a collection of small coins had become a resource for hundreds of young learners across two public schools.
