MCD's Jangpura Pet Park Project Stuck in Limbo for Two Years
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) ambitious pet park project at Jangpura has remained in a state of limbo for nearly two years, as the civic body continues to struggle with finalizing an agency to operate the facility. Developed in early 2023 over a sprawling 1.5-acre area, this multi-purpose recreational space was envisioned to serve as a haven for pet dogs, offering day-care services and basic veterinary support. However, in the absence of an appointed operator, the entire infrastructure lies dormant and unused.
Delays in Committee Formation and Approval Processes
Initially, the project faced significant delays due to the non-formation of the MCD standing committee, which was responsible for finalizing rates and approving offers from agencies selected through the tendering process. Even after a high-powered committee was constituted in June 2025, the proposal was not tabled for discussion. Officials have now indicated that the proposal will soon be placed before the higher authority, potentially kickstarting the process of appointing an operator.
"The tendering process for the project is complete and now it will be placed before the standing committee for final approval," an official stated, highlighting the procedural hurdles that have plagued the initiative.
Unique Features and Amenities Planned for the Park
The pet park is designed to offer a range of unique features aimed at enhancing the experience for both pets and their owners. Planned amenities include:
- Presence of veterinary doctors for on-site medical assistance
- A sand pit for playful activities
- A pet supplies shop for convenience
- A café with a dedicated party area
- Day-care facilities for working pet owners
- Dog trails and a swimming area for exercise
Additionally, the park will feature dedicated defecation zones with adequate lighting and installed boards outlining rules and regulations to ensure orderly use.
Addressing Urban Challenges and Safety Concerns
With Delhi becoming increasingly congested and leash laws more restrictive, dog owners are actively seeking safe, off-leash spaces where their pets can socialize and exercise. Properly fenced dog parks offer an effective solution to this growing need, an official emphasized. The park will facilitate various activities such as running, swimming, training, tracking, digging, herding, and companionship, catering to diverse canine interests.
The facility will also include medical and grooming outlets, along with a day-care service to assist working pet owners. Access to the park will be strictly regulated through a registration process, with counters set up to ensure convenience and safety for all users.
Broader Implications and Future Plans
The operation of this park has gained added urgency following the Supreme Court's directive to the MCD to develop shelters for attacking stray dogs. A small portion of the site might be developed as a shelter for strays, featuring a separate entrance and no linkage to the recreational area designated for pet dogs. This dual-purpose approach aims to address both recreational needs and animal welfare concerns in the city.
As the project awaits final approvals, stakeholders remain hopeful that the Jangpura pet park will soon become a reality, providing a much-needed recreational space for Delhi's growing pet community.
