Shillong: The first phase of Census 2027 operations in Meghalaya commenced on Saturday with the launch of the house listing and housing census field operations across 9,950 house listing blocks (HLBs) throughout the state. This month-long exercise is scheduled to continue until June 14, covering all 12 districts through a fully digital mode of data collection.
Digital Enumeration and Self-Enumeration
The online self-enumeration phase, which began on May 1, concluded on May 15 at midnight. This allowed residents to submit their information digitally before the field enumeration began.
Appointment of Enumerators and Supervisors
Biswajit Pegu, director of census operations in Meghalaya, stated that 8,309 enumerators and supervisors have been appointed across the state for conducting the house listing and housing census. These officials will collect information relating to housing conditions, drinking water sources, sanitation facilities, household amenities, and assets.
Enumerators will visit every building and household during the 30-day field operation to ensure complete and accurate coverage. The data collection process is entirely digital, utilizing mobile devices and online platforms to streamline the process and improve accuracy.
Scope of Data Collection
The census will gather detailed information on various aspects of living conditions, including:
- Housing conditions and structural details
- Drinking water sources and availability
- Sanitation facilities and waste management
- Household amenities such as electricity, cooking fuel, and internet connectivity
- Household assets including vehicles, appliances, and electronic devices
This comprehensive data will help in planning and policy formulation for the state's development.
