MHA Directs Full Rendition of Vande Mataram at Official Ceremonies
The Union Home Ministry has issued a comprehensive order mandating that all six stanzas of the national song 'Vande Mataram' be sung at all official functions and public occasions. This directive reinstates the last four stanzas that were previously omitted by the Jawaharlal Nehru government, reportedly to maintain the song's secular character.
Official Version and Duration Specified
The order, dated February 6, 2026, establishes the official version of the song, which encompasses Bankim Chandra Chatterjee's original composition in its entirety. According to the guidelines, the duration for playing or singing 'Vande Mataram' has been set at precisely 3 minutes and 10 seconds. The ministry has detailed specific occasions and protocols to ensure the national song is honored appropriately.
Protocols for Audience and Occasions
All audience members present during the rendition of 'Vande Mataram' are required to stand in attention. However, this rule is exempted in cinema halls when the song is part of a film or newsreel, as standing could disrupt viewing and potentially cause disturbances. The national song is to be played at civil honorary ceremonies, official state functions, and events attended by the President of India, both upon arrival and departure.
Broadcast and State-Level Implementation
'Vande Mataram' will also be played before and after the President's address to the nation on state media platforms such as Akashwani and Doordarshan. At the state level, the song must be performed upon the arrival and departure of governors or lieutenant governors at official functions. Additionally, it may be played at any other occasion authorized by the Government of India.
Musical Prelude and School Assemblies
Before the national song begins, a drumroll using instruments like the mridang or trumpet will be played. In marching drills, seven steps will lead into the start of the song. The MHA has emphasized that 'Vande Mataram' should be sung at cultural events and flag-hoisting ceremonies, with all six stanzas performed as per the official version. Informal events attended by ministers may also include group renditions, and morning school assemblies across all schools must incorporate group singing of the song as part of their routine.
Historical Context and Anniversary
This directive coincides with the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the creation of 'Vande Mataram,' reinforcing its significance in national events. The move aims to preserve the song's original composition and promote its cultural heritage in official settings.
