In a significant move to bolster civic services and sanitation infrastructure, the Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC) is set to implement major initiatives starting January 28, 2026. These reforms aim to improve cleanliness, transparency, and operational efficiency across municipal functions, marking a pivotal step in urban management.
New Waste Management System for Enhanced Cleanliness
Municipal Commissioner Parminder Pal Singh Sandhu, in an exclusive conversation with The Indian Express, revealed that the MC has awarded a fresh tender for door-to-door waste collection. This decision aligns with directives from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), emphasizing environmental compliance.
The new system is designed to ensure proper segregation of waste and its scientific disposal. By adopting these measures, the corporation anticipates cleaner localities and stronger environmental protection throughout Mohali. This initiative reflects a proactive approach to urban sustainability and public health.
Aadhaar-Based Attendance for Greater Accountability
To enhance accountability and transparency, the corporation has introduced an Aadhaar-based online attendance system. This innovative mechanism will apply to employees across all departments, including sanitation and solid waste management staff.
Under this new framework, employees can mark attendance directly from their mobile phones at their actual duty locations. This enables real-time monitoring of field staff, improving the quality and efficiency of civic services. The system is expected to streamline operations and reduce discrepancies in workforce management.
Adjustment of Existing Sanitation Workers
Earlier, the civic body unanimously passed a resolution addressing the status of sanitation workers already engaged in door-to-door waste collection. According to the resolution, these workers will be adjusted by the new company awarded the tender.
Key provisions for these workers include:
- Receiving online salaries directly into their proper bank accounts.
- Being provided with necessary facilities, such as safety gear.
This adjustment aims to ensure a smooth transition while safeguarding the interests of existing employees.
Commitment to Modernization and Public Convenience
Commissioner Sandhu emphasized that these initiatives underscore the corporation's dedication to efficiency, transparency, and the adoption of modern technology. "Our objective is to develop Mohali as a clean, well-organised, and sustainable city," he stated, highlighting the long-term vision for urban development.
Reassuring residents, Sandhu noted that all reforms are being implemented with a focus on public convenience and strengthening the city's civic infrastructure. The goal is to ensure better and more effective delivery of municipal services, enhancing the overall quality of life in Mohali.
Potential Challenges and Opposition
Despite these advancements, the rollout faces potential hurdles. In a press note, Punjab Safai Mazdoor Federation general secretary Pawan Goyal announced that sanitation workers plan to go on an "indefinite strike" starting January 28. This action opposes the new system and tender process, indicating possible resistance to the changes.
The corporation will need to address these concerns to ensure the successful implementation of its sanitation initiatives. Balancing technological upgrades with workforce welfare remains a critical aspect of this urban transformation.
