Mumbai Metro Line 5 Gets New 2026 Deadline

Mumbai's Long-Awaited Metro Line 5 Receives Fresh December 2026 Deadline

After years of persistent delays, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region's much-anticipated Metro Line 5, commonly known as the Orange Line, has been assigned a new operational target. Officials have now indicated that the first phase of the Thane–Bhiwandi stretch could become fully operational for passenger service by December 2026.

Political Confidence and Official Inspections

BJP MLA Mahesh Chaughule expressed strong confidence in the project's progress, stating that ongoing construction work is entering its final stages. He emphasized that all technical aspects of the metro project are expected to be completed in time to meet the December 2026 deadline. "MMRDA officials confirmed that if everything proceeds according to plan, the metro could be opened for passengers by December 2026," Chaughule reported following a comprehensive joint inspection conducted on Thursday.

The inspection involved officials from multiple agencies including the Bhiwandi Municipal Corporation, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), and metro authorities. Earlier that same day, a crucial meeting focused on traffic planning and metro-related infrastructure was held at the municipal headquarters under the leadership of Mayor Narayan Chaudhary.

Infrastructure Development and Funding Requirements

Following the strategic meeting, officials conducted an on-ground assessment of the critical stretch between Anjurphata and Dhamankar Naka, where construction activities are currently concentrated. During the discussions, MMRDA officials presented a detailed infrastructure blueprint for Bhiwandi city, estimating a substantial financial requirement of Rs 3,771 crore for development works across three distinct phases.

This comprehensive plan is expected to accelerate numerous long-pending infrastructure projects, including:

  • Road widening beneath the elevated metro corridor
  • Significant improvements along the Kalyan Road stretch
  • Enhanced urban connectivity and transportation networks

Municipal Responsibilities and Revenue Generation

While welcoming the renewed momentum, Mayor Narayan Chaudhary emphasized that metro authorities must assume complete responsibility for maintaining cleanliness in areas surrounding the metro corridor. Civic Commissioner Anmol Sagar further explored potential revenue generation opportunities through advertisements placed on metro pillars, suggesting innovative financing approaches for urban infrastructure.

Project Background and Commuter Challenges

The Metro Line 5 project holds particular significance for Bhiwandi, which currently lacks direct suburban railway connectivity to Mumbai. This transportation gap forces daily commuters to rely on less efficient bus services or circuitous travel routes through Thane and Kalyan. The metro project received official approval from MMRDA in 2017 and was ceremonially inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018.

Despite these early milestones, construction progress has remained notably slow since physical work commenced in 2020. A particularly concerning aspect is that work on Phase 2 of the project has not yet begun, adding to commuter anxieties about potential further delays in achieving comprehensive metro connectivity across the region.

The newly announced December 2026 deadline represents a crucial milestone for one of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region's most delayed infrastructure projects, offering renewed hope for improved public transportation options for thousands of daily commuters.
