Mumbai Residents Endure Night-Long Power Cuts, Demand Answers from BEST
Residents in multiple neighborhoods of Mumbai's island city faced extensive and prolonged power cuts from late Tuesday night continuing into the early hours of Wednesday, sparking widespread frustration and anger over both the outages themselves and the complete lack of timely communication from the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking.
Severe Disruptions Across Key Neighborhoods
The situation became particularly tense in Worli, where locals were forced to take to the streets in the middle of the night to demand that electricity supply be restored immediately. Residents of Worli village reported that the area had been suffering from repeated power disruptions over the preceding three days, with the situation culminating in a complete blackout lasting from approximately 1:20 AM until 6:30 AM on Wednesday.
In Sion, residents endured power cuts extending up to five hours, while parts of the iconic Marine Drive and Marine Lines areas were also plunged into darkness after a power feeder tripped unexpectedly. Another affected area, Antop Hill, lost power at midnight with restoration only occurring around 5:00 AM, leaving residents without electricity for the entire night.
Official Explanations and Public Skepticism
A source within BEST provided technical explanations for the outages, stating that the Sion disruption was caused by a "local fault" in the substation, with reports indicating that part of the infrastructure had caught fire. For Worli, the issue was attributed to a "cable-related problem." However, these explanations did little to appease angry residents who felt blindsided by the nighttime blackouts.
Former BEST panel member Ravi Raja, who was personally affected by the outages, questioned why the utility failed to inform consumers about the reasons for the disruption despite having access to customers' mobile numbers and email addresses. "Mumbai is called an international city, yet reasons for power outage are not intimated to consumers," one frustrated resident noted, comparing BEST unfavorably to other utilities like Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) that routinely send messages about supply disruptions.
Summer Hardships and Infrastructure Concerns
The timing of the blackouts during summer months added to residents' suffering. Dhanpal Solanki from Worli described the "immense hardship" caused by the outage, noting that senior citizens struggled without ventilation, small children cried through the night unable to sleep, and working professionals returned from their jobs only to be deprived of basic rest.
Solanki further alleged that the repeated power failures in Worli were connected to illegal constructions in the area, claiming that these unauthorized structures were placing excessive pressure on local electrical infrastructure. Residents across affected areas expressed frustration that they were given neither expected restoration timelines nor clear helpline escalation mechanisms during the crisis.
Calls for Improved Consumer Communication
The widespread outages have highlighted what many residents describe as a "pathetic" communication system from BEST, with multiple affected individuals urging the utility to become more consumer-friendly and transparent. The lack of proactive updates during extended power failures has raised serious questions about BEST's emergency response protocols and customer service standards.
As Mumbai continues to position itself as a global metropolis, residents are demanding that basic utility services match international standards of reliability and communication, particularly during emergencies that affect thousands of households across the city's central and southern regions.
