Mumbai-Pune Expressway Toll Refunds: Rs 5.16 Crore to Be Returned After 33-Hour Jam

Motorists who were stranded in the massive traffic jam on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway earlier this month are set to receive toll refunds. Authorities have decided to return toll charges collected during the disruption, with the total refund amounting to Rs 5.16 crore, as reported by PTI.

Massive Refund for Over One Lakh Vehicle Owners

According to officials from the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation, more than one lakh vehicle owners will benefit from this decision. The refund will be credited directly to the FASTag accounts of affected motorists over the next few days, ensuring a seamless and efficient reimbursement process.

Details of the Disruption and Its Impact

The disruption took place on February 3 after a gas tanker overturned near the Khopoli stretch of the expressway. This incident caused a major traffic jam that lasted around 33 hours, leading to long queues of vehicles and leaving many travellers stranded for extended periods with limited access to food, water, and other basic facilities.

After the accident, authorities ordered toll collection to be stopped immediately. However, in many cases, toll payments had already been deducted automatically through FASTag systems before the toll plazas were fully opened, creating a need for refunds.

Authorities Take Action to Rectify the Situation

Officials stated that the decision has been taken to refund all such toll charges collected after the suspension order. The toll operator has been asked to provide complete FASTag transaction records so that affected motorists can be accurately identified and reimbursed without delay.

Authorities also noted that some transactions were processed automatically despite instructions to halt toll collection. These cases are being thoroughly reviewed, and the deducted amounts will be promptly returned to vehicle owners to ensure fairness and transparency in the refund process.

Ensuring Accountability and Future Preparedness

This move highlights the commitment of Maharashtra authorities to address grievances and uphold accountability in public infrastructure management. By implementing direct refunds to FASTag accounts, they aim to minimize inconvenience for commuters and set a precedent for handling similar disruptions in the future.

The incident underscores the importance of robust emergency response mechanisms on critical highways like the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, which is a vital corridor for transportation and commerce in the region.
