Authorities Issue Advisory Amid Heavy Rains
In response to the heavy downpour lashing Mumbai, authorities have issued a fresh advisory asking private companies to allow their employees to work from home. Semi-government offices have been directed to operate for half a day only. The measures aim to reduce traffic congestion and ensure public safety as the city grapples with waterlogging and disrupted transport services.
Private Sector Urged to Adopt Remote Work
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the state disaster management authority have urged private firms to permit work from home for their staff. According to an official statement, this is to minimize the number of commuters on the roads and avoid accidents. The advisory also requests private companies to be flexible with attendance policies for employees who are unable to reach offices due to flooded streets or train delays.
Half-Day for Semi-Government Offices
For semi-government offices, the administration has declared a half-day holiday. Employees are expected to leave by early afternoon to avoid the peak evening rush when rains are forecast to intensify. The decision was taken after reviewing the weather update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which predicted continued heavy rainfall in the coastal city.
Public Urged to Stay Indoors
Authorities have also appealed to the general public to avoid unnecessary travel and remain indoors unless absolutely essential. The IMD has issued a red alert for Mumbai and neighboring districts, warning of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places. The civic body has deployed pumps and rescue teams in low-lying areas, but waterlogging has already been reported in several parts of the city, including Sion, Dadar, and Andheri.
Impact on Daily Life
The rains have disrupted local train services, the lifeline of Mumbai, with delays and cancellations reported on the Central, Western, and Harbour lines. Best Road transport is also affected, with many buses running late or being diverted. Schools and colleges in the city had already been declared closed for the day. The city's airport has advised passengers to check with their airlines for flight status, as some flights have been delayed due to low visibility.
Precautionary Measures
The BMC has advised residents to stay away from coastal areas and avoid wading through floodwaters. Citizens have been asked to report any fallen trees or electrical hazards to the control room. The disaster management cell is on high alert, and emergency services have been instructed to remain accessible. The advisory also warns against parking vehicles under trees or near hoardings.
