Nagpur Municipal Corporation Expands Fleet to Enhance Civic Services

In a significant move to bolster emergency response capabilities and improve municipal services, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) officially inducted a new fleet of vehicles and equipment on Monday. The additions include six mini fire tenders, 25 door-to-door garbage collection vehicles, and three poclain machines, aimed at addressing critical urban challenges.

Mayor Flags Off New Vehicles at Civic Headquarters

The ceremonial flag-off event took place at the civic headquarters, presided over by Mayor Neeta Thakre. She was joined by Deputy Mayor Leela Hattibed, ruling party leader Narendra Borkar, Municipal Commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari, and several other senior officials. This initiative marks a proactive step by the NMC to upgrade infrastructure and enhance service delivery across the city.

Mini Fire Tenders to Tackle Narrow Lanes and Congested Areas

Nagpur, spanning approximately 227 square kilometers, has experienced rapid expansion, with many older localities characterized by narrow lanes. During fire emergencies, standard large tenders often face difficulties accessing these congested areas, leading to delayed responses and increased risks to life and property. To address this critical gap, the NMC has procured six mini fire tenders, each with a 2,000-liter capacity, at a cost of Rs 6.07 crore under the 2024-25 budget.

Fabricated by Devi Fire Services based in Solapur, these vehicles were delivered on January 8, 2026. With four existing mini tenders already operational, the fleet now boasts a total of 10 compact units specifically designed to navigate densely populated and narrow stretches effectively. In addition to these, the fire department maintains a comprehensive arsenal including seven 16,000-liter tenders, fourteen 5,000-liter capacity tenders, a 70-meter hydraulic platform, a 32-meter hydraulic platform, and a 42-meter TTL for high-rise emergencies.

Enhanced Solid Waste Management with New Garbage Collection Vehicles

In the realm of solid waste management, the NMC has introduced 25 new garbage collection vehicles to replace aging units. The deployment strategy allocates five vehicles to serve zones 6 through 10, while the remaining 20 will be operational in zones 1 to 5. This procurement was financed through Rs 4.47 crore recovered as penalties from waste collection agencies BVG India Ltd and Enviro Infra Projects Ltd, ensuring efficient resource utilization.

Pre-Monsoon Preparations with Poclain Machines for Drain Cleaning

Ahead of the upcoming monsoon season, the NMC has also acquired specialized equipment to mitigate waterlogging and urban flooding risks. The new additions include a 25-tonne long-boom machine dedicated to river cleaning, along with two poclain machines—one weighing 5 tonnes and the other 3.5 tonnes. These machines are specifically intended for desilting narrow drains, a crucial measure to prevent blockages and ensure smooth water flow during heavy rains.

This comprehensive fleet expansion underscores the NMC's commitment to improving civic amenities, enhancing public safety, and preparing for seasonal challenges. By investing in targeted infrastructure, the corporation aims to create a more resilient and responsive urban environment for Nagpur's residents.
